Laboratories

FINMARI laboratories have well-defined development profiles in accordance to the roles of each partner in the alliance.

The field station laboratories benefit from their immediate access to biological material from the studied habitat range. The SYKE-MRC Marine Ecology Laboratory emphasizes development of experimental techniques and application of cultured organisms in experimentation.

The FINMARI RI development plan aims at strengthening collaborative research of the laboratories through joint acquisition of state-of-the-art instrumentation for essential environmental parameters. This includes coordinated laboratory instrumentation.

Main emphasis will be, however, on creating nationally unique and internationally highly competent marine RI hotspots supporting research breakthroughs in the identified topic areas of each FINMARI laboratory partner:

- connections between ecological interactions and genetics (Seili/UTU),
- biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (Tvärminne/UHEL),
- climate change and structure/function of coastal communities/populations (Husö/ÅAU), and
- phytoplankton functional traits and diversity (SYKE-MRC)
