Laboratories

FINMARI laboratories have well-defined development profiles in accordance to the roles of each partner in the alliance.

The field station laboratories benefit from their immediate access to biological material from the studied habitat range. The  Marine Ecology Laboratory of Syke emphasizes development of experimental techniques and application of cultured organisms in experimentation.

Examples of laboratory instruments: A FlowCam for image analysis , and a photosyntetron in a fast rate repetition fluorometer FRRF for measuring  photosynthesis . 

The FINMARI RI development plan aims at strengthening collaborative research of the laboratories through joint acquisition of state-of-the-art instrumentation for essential environmental parameters. This includes coordinated laboratory instrumentation.

Main emphasis will be, however, on creating nationally unique and internationally highly competent marine RI hotspots supporting research breakthroughs in the identified topic areas of each FINMARI laboratory partner:

• ecological interactions and genetics, long-term changes (Archipelago Research Institute)
• climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (Tvärminne Zoological Station)
• climate change, structure/function of coastal communities/populations (Husö Biological Station)
• plankton ecology, genetics, blue economy, microplastics (Syke Marine Research Laboratory)
