Coastal seas are the most productive and dynamic environment of the World Ocean, offering significant services for mankind. Sustainable ecosystem functions, habitat protection, risk management, climate change impacts, maritime safety – all Grand Challenges related to coastal seas require vastly more comprehensible and integrated, spatially more extensive, and temporally more intensive observations than is available today for practically any coastal sea region.
Finnish Marine Research Infrastructure FINMARI combines all major components of the Finnish marine research community, representing them on the National Research Infrastructure roadmap. We address the multiscale variability of the marine environment through synergetic integration of the research foci of the partnership, to create a solid knowledge base for the protection of the Baltic Sea.
FINMARI is a distributed network of four Finnish research institutes and three universities, complementing each other. The consortium operates research vessels, field stations and laboratories, automatic platforms and instruments, and platforms for research and surveillance of the marine environment. FINMARI provides a unique contact point to all major Finnish marine research facilities.
FINMARI is coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE.
